Youngsters ghosting their new bosses in the UK: Would you ever?

We all have ghosted or have been ghosted by a date sometimes. No big deal, it happens. Would you do this to your new boss in a brand new shiny new job on your first Monday though?

A recent survey by Indeed, involving 1,500 businesses and 1,500 workers, sheds light on this growing trend, revealing that a staggering 75% of workers have engaged in ghosting potential employers in the past year.

Even more startling is that 93% of Gen Z job-seekers have skipped out on job interviews, with 87% admitting to abandoning their new roles on the very first day after signing their contracts.

But why is this happening? According to research, the answer lies in the desire for control. Today's job-seekers, particularly those from Gen Z, yearn to be in the driver's seat of their careers, dictating terms and navigating their paths with autonomy. Not sure this kind of behavior helps though....what do you think?

The repercussions for businesses are far from negligible. Over half of the surveyed companies report that ghosting has compounded the challenges of hiring, making it a pervasive issue across generations. Although Gen Zers are at the forefront, even Baby Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials occasionally partake in this behavior, albeit with a side of regret.

And it gets worse! About 20% of workers have experienced potential employers ghosting them, either by missing phone interviews or failing to follow up after extending a job offer.

It just makes me think: What causes this? What is so broken with us that we can't keep to simple ethics and be trustworthy?

A lot to unpack....what do you think?
